Since Latin II is the final year of language for the students in this class, these students decided to create a "real" mosaic with stone & glass tiles, grout, et cetera, as a final project. In Quarter 2, The students researched mosaics and wrote an essay about them, then looked at examples of Roman Mosaics from their research to create a design. With the art teacher's help, the Latin II class projected a design onto the white board, traced it, then altered the design to their liking. Then they took a picture of that and projected it onto the plywood board that is the backing and traced it with pencil before outlining it with permanent marker.
The tiles the students used are real stone, but lightweight and can be cut with scissors. This allowed the Latin II class to shape the stones to fit the design they created and create shadows and curvature in their mosaic. We were also gifted with a wonderful donation of angled, needle-nose tweezers from Mr. and Mrs. Good. Those have been a great help in getting the small pieces of tile into place.
In Quarter 3, the students made a slight modification to the design to include their initals and the year, which is a great tribute to their hard work and dedication to Latin for the last two years!
